Outbound open innovation in universities and in particular on the economic exploitation of knowledge produced by the universities.
For over the years, academic researchers as well as companies have been looking for new, better but different ways to ameliorate their research/businesses which have led to a gradual shift from a close to an open innovation. This has given rise to the idea of licensing through the acquisition of patent (mostly technology that start-ups or already existing institutions or firms could not afford) in order to carry on with their development programs. However, in recent years, Universities have greatly involved in the buying and most especially in the selling of patents which are either generated from their research or their new technology discoveries. The aim of this paper is to systematically analyse the extent to which Universities adopts the idea of outbound open innovation and in particular on the economic exploitation of knowledge produced by these universities.
