I year

Teaching

The teaching activity consists of two semesters and includes various modules and exams as illustrated in the table below. Some of the modules are shared by the different CVs of the programme.
All the teaching is carried out in English.

 

XXXIV cycle, FIRST YEAR

I SEMESTER - 01.11 2018 - 30.04.2019

Assessment
Discussion Winter paper - 01.09.2019 - 15.10.2019

 

Compulsory Exams
At the end of each module, students are required to pass an exam with a mark of at least C. Exams may consist on a written text or the presentation of a paper.

 

Winter paper
During the first year, students are required to write a paper, typically a critical review of the literature of their research project, which is presented during the DIES PhD Day in September. Each student has his/her own discussant coming either from the PhD Faculty or from another university. Students who get a 6/10 mark are required to re-submit their paper by December 15th.

 

II year

Teaching
During the second year, students are required to follow a number of seminars that are specifically organized for the PhD programme. Presenters are usually invited from foreign universities.


Winter paper
During the second year, students are required to write a paper, typically a critical review of the literature of their research project. The paper is presented during the DIES PhD Day in September. Each student has his/her own discussant coming either from the PhD Faculty or from another university. Students who get a 6/10 mark are required to re-submit their paper by December 15th.


Period abroad
During the second semester of the second year, students are highly encouraged to spend a period abroad in a partner university. Students are highly encouraged to structure their period abroad in the form of a cotutelle which may be of significant importance for their future academic career. If the period abroad lasts more than two and up to six months there the scholarship is increased by 50%.

 

III year

Thesis
During the third year, students are expected to conclude their research project and either write a thesis or three papers. Students are highly encouraged to try and publish their work even before the end of the programme.

 

Final presentation
At the end of the third year, students are required to present their work during the DIES PhD Day in September. Each student has his/her own discussant coming either from the PhD Faculty or from another university. In order to be admitted to the final exam students are required to receive a positive assessment of their work by a special committee which is made up of the supervisors of all the students of the same cycle.

During the three years, the students are involved in some teaching activity, in various research projects carried out by their own supervisors and in some company visits. 

 

Common courses to all the PhD Students of Uniud
The University of Udine organizes a number of modules mostly aimed at developing soft skills (speaking in public, writing a paper in English, etc.).
